The following are up-to-date announcements affecting traffic in the I-25 Trinidad construction zone:

June 18, 2008 TEMPORARY NORTH BOUND I-25 CLOSURE: North bound I-25 through Trinidad will be closed temporarily on Thursday June 19, 2008 from 1:00 a.m. until 5:00 a.m. Lawrence Construction will be placing form work for the new bridge over the Purgatoire River. Because there is insufficient room for their equipment between the existing I-25 and the new bridge, the north bound lane of I-25 will be used to install form work. Crews will use this time to repair potholes and conduct other clean up on the northbound lane. During this temporary closure, traffic will be detoured off I-25 at Main Street through town on the designated Incident Management Route and back onto I-25 at the Goddard Interchange. We thank you for your patience during these closures and detours.
May 30, 2008 TEMPORARY COMMERCIAL STREET CLOSURE: Commercial Street will be closed from Hadad Street to Pine Street beginning Friday, May 30, until Wednesday, June 11, 2008. This closure will allow the contractor to install curb and gutters and to pave the new Commercial Street. The I-25 “on-ramp” at Commercial Street will be closed during this time. Access to the AMTRAK depot will be from Pine Street. Local detours will be in place to direct traffic around this area. We thank you for your patience during these closures and detours.
May 2, 2008 PINE STREET TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS: Lawrence Construction Company will be installing a sanitary sewer line in Pine Street next week, closing portions of the street from Tuesday May 6 until Friday May 9, 2008. Pine Street will be closed between Arizona Avenue and Commercial Street. Access to the AMTRAK depot will be available from Commercial Street. Pine Street will be closed to through traffic from Arizona Avenue to Nevada Avenue. Lane widths will be reduced to one lane and left turns will be restricted at Pine Street and Nevada Avenue. Arizona Avenue will be closed to through traffic between Colorado Avenue and Pine Street. All local businesses on these streets will be open for business as usual. We thank you for your patience during these closures.
April 4, 2008 UTILITY INSTALLATION, TEMPORARY CLOSURE AT THE COMMERCIAL AND PINE STREET INTERSECTION: Lawrence Construction Company will be installing utilities in Commercial and Pine Streets forcing the temporary closure of that intersection from Monday April 7, 2008 to Friday April 11, 2008. The south bound traffic on Commercial St. will be detoured onto Broom Street or to the north bound I-25 “on ramp”. The north bound traffic on Commercial St. will be detoured onto Pine St. and will not be able to access the north bound I-25 “on ramp”. Local detours will be installed to direct traffic around this intersection. All local businesses will remain open for business as usual.
February 27, 2008 TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF INTERSTATE 25 FEBRUARY 28 FROM 9:00AM TO 4:00PM: On February 28, 2008 Lawrence Construction Company will be closing both directions of I-25 between Main Street and Kit Carson Trail (US 160) for electrical work and bridge deck repairs. Southbound traffic will be detoured off I-25 (at Exit 15) onto Kit Carson Trail (US 160 East), through downtown on Main Street and re-enter the highway at Main Street ramp (Exit 13B). Northbound traffic will be detoured off I-25 at Main Street (Exit 13B) through downtown on Main Street, west on Kit Carson Trail (US 160) and re-enter the highway at the Kit Carson Trail ramp (Exit 15). Detour signage will be in place.
This work related closure is weather permitting. In the event of bad weather conditions this work will be rescheduled.
February 15, 2008 DETOURS AT MAIN STREET AND COMMERCIAL STREET STARTING MONDAY: Lawrence Construction Company will be installing bridge girders on I-25 near Commercial Street. Commercial Street will be closed between the BNSF railroad tracks and Broom Street. The on-ramp from Commercial Street to northbound I-25 will also be closed during this installation. This closure will occur Monday February 18, 2008 between 6:30 am and 2:00 pm. Detour signage will be in place.
Additionally, Lawrence Construction will be setting girders at the Main Street Bridge on Thursday February 21, 2008 from approximately 6:30 am to 4:00 pm. During this time southbound and northbound exit ramps (13B) from I-25 to Main Street will be closed. The on-ramp from Main Street to northbound I-25 will remain open but drivers may experience brief 15-minute delays. Local traffic will be detoured around this intersection. Signage will be in place well in advance of the detours. Northbound I-25 traffic will exit on Santa Fe (Exit 11) and on Van Buren (Exit 13A). Southbound I-25 traffic will exit on Colorado Avenue (Exit 14B).
February 8, 2008 TRAFFIC DETOURS NEXT WEEK: Lawrence Construction Company will begin installing storm sewer and electrical lines. This construction will cause the temporary closure of College Street between Nevada Avenue and State Street. Cedar Street will be closed between Nevada Avenue and Modica Street. Detour signage will be installed to direct traffic around this intersection. Traffic on Nevada Avenue should not be disrupted. These detours are expected to be in effect from Monday February 11, 2008 until Friday, February 15, 2008.
November 8, 2007 I-25 Trinidad construction project TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF NOVEMBER 12: Next week Lawrence Construction will be setting girders on the viaduct over Pine Street and Nevada Street. Pine Street and Nevada Street will be closed as needed while girders are set above the roadway. Closures will not last more than a day. All other streets and ramps should remain open.
October 5, 2007 WORK CONTINUES ON SANITARY SEWER LINES: Lawrence Construction Company continues to install sanitary sewer lines along Commercial Street. Commercial Street will remain closed between the northbound on ramp and Hadad Drive. The northbound on ramp will be accessible only from Commercial Street via Pine Street or the downtown area, all I-25 Trinidad construction project access is expected to reopen in approximately two weeks.
In addition to the sanitary sewer line replacement along Commercial Street, work continues on the Mechanically Stabilized Earth walls, setting of forms and reinforcing steel for the Main Street Bridge. Minor traffic delays are expected at Main Street and the Interstate ramps to allow for trucks to enter and exit the work area
September 28, 2007 PROGRESS CONTINUES: Sanitary sewer line replacement continues along Commercial Street. Although the intersection of Pine Street and Commercial Street has been reopened, Commercial Street will remain closed between the northbound on ramp and Hadad Drive for a few more weeks. The northbound on ramp will be accessible only from Commercial Street via Pine Street or the downtown area, all access is expected to reopen in three weeks.
In addition to the sanitary sewer line replacement along Commercial Street, work continues on the Mechanically Stabilized Earth walls, setting of forms and reinforcing steel for the Main Street Bridge. Minor traffic delays are expected at Main Street and the Interstate ramps to allow for trucks to enter and exit the work area
The BNSF Railroad will be working on the Railroad Crossing tracks and approaches at University Street. University Street will be closed between Nevada Avenue and State Street, Monday October 1, through Friday October 5.
September 21, 2007 DEMOLITION IS COMPLETE: Demolition of all bridges and buildings is complete for this phase of the reconstruction project. Work continues on the Commercial Street sewer line with Commercial Street being closed between Pine Street and the I-25 northbound on ramp. The ramp is not accessible from the downtown area, but is expected to remain open for traffic traveling southward down Commercial Street from the five points intersection of Arizona, Commercial and Colorado Streets. Main St. Bridge AbutmentIntermittent closure of the northbound on ramp will occur as sewer line work progresses. Minor traffic delays are expected at Main Street and the Interstate ramps to allow for trucks to enter and exit the work area Construction continues on the viaduct bridge piers and the Main Street bridge landscape walls.
September 7, 2007 INSTALLING SANITARY SEWER LINES: Lawrence Construction Company will be installing new sanitary sewer lines from Monday, September 10 through Monday, September 17. During this time, Commercial Street will be closed from Pine Street to the railroad tracks. Throughout the remainder of September, utility lines will be replaced along Pine Street between Arizona Street and Commercial Street, along Commercial Street between Hadad Drive and the railroad tracks and along Hadad Drive east of Commercial Street. Local detours will be in place to direct traffic around the construction. Access to local businesses will remain open at all times.
August 3, 2007 northbound I-25 viaduct demolition TEMPORARY STREET CLOSURES: As the northbound I-25 viaduct is being demolished overhead, some streets will be temporarily closed for the safety of the public. Earlier this week Nevada Avenue between Pine Street and College Street was closed and by this weekend College Street between State Street and Nevada Avenue will be closed. During these closures, traffic will be detoured onto adjacent streets between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. and should only be in effect for one day. Intersection closures will be announced as the schedule becomes available.
July 31, 2007 CLOSURES: The Colorado Department of Transportation will be temporarily closing Nevada Avenue between Pine Street and College Street in Trinidad on Wednesday August 1, 2007. This closure is for your safety as the northbound I-25 viaduct is being demolished overhead. Traffic will be detoured onto adjacent streets from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm and should be for one day only. It is anticipated that demolition work will continue to the south and College Street will be closed on Friday August 3, 2007. Once again traffic will be detoured to adjacent side streets from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm for one day only. This work is being done to prepare for the new alignment of northbound I-25 through Trinidad. This construction project should be completed by the summer of 2009.
July 27, 2007 DEMOLITION CONTINUES TO UNIVERSITY: As you’ve noticed, the concrete is falling. Bit by bit and piece-by-piece the viaduct is being demolished. Early next week Lawrence Construction expects to begin demolition work on the northbound I-25 viaduct above the railroad tracks and University Street (State Highway 12). This work is expected to last three days. During this time, traffic will be detoured north on State Street, east on College Street then south on Nevada. Demolition work is expected to continue into August. Various intersections will be closed for safety as demolition work progresses overhead, intersection closures will be announced as the schedule becomes available.
July 20, 2007 I-25 NORTHBOUND VIADUCT DEMOLITION: Lawrence Construction is beginning the demolition of the existing I-25 northbound viaduct. This work is expected to continue through the remainder of July and into August. Various intersections will be closed for safety as demolition work progresses overhead, intersection closures will be announced as the schedule becomes available. Each intersection is expected to be closed for approximately three days as the bridge and girders are removed. During this time traffic will be detoured to adjacent streets.
June 29, 2007 STORM DRAIN INSTALLATION: In the coming week, Lawrence Construction Company will be installing a storm drain adjacent to the interstate on Main Street, and across the northbound on-ramp at Main Street. Traffic will be reduced to one lane and controlled by flaggers. Construction will continue on the retaining walls for the Commercial Street northbound on-ramp and the Main Street ramps.
June 15, 2007 COLUMNS, RETAINING WALLS AND STORM DRAINS: Lawrence Construction Company is continuing to install footings, and columns for the new northbound alignment of I-25 near Commercial Street. In addition, they will begin the construction of retaining walls near the Main Street bridge adjacent to the Commercial Street on-ramp and storm drains will be installed under the Main Street on-ramp. Traffic will be limited to one lane, flagging crews will be on-hand to direct traffic flow.
June 8, 2007 abutment caissons BUILDING COLUMNS: Lawrence Construction Company will be constructing bridge abutments for the new northbound I-25 bridge over Main Street. Once the abutments are complete, construction will begin for the landscaped retaining walls. The contractor will also be starting to construct pier footings for the new northbound I-25 viaduct between the Pizza Hut building and Commercial Street. There may be minor traffic delays but no street closures are expected.
May 18, 2007 BUILDING THE INFRASTRUCTURE: For the next few weeks, construction crews will continue to build embankments, retaining walls and storm drains. This activity should not cause any new closures to exits or ramps. Repair work will continue on the south bound I-25 viaduct causing periodic lane closures.
May 11, 2007 CONSTRUCTION BEGINS: Demolition of the north bound I-25 bridge over Main Street is complete and this week the contractor started to construct the new bridge. They will also be constructing the new alignment of I-25 between Van Buren and Main Street. This work will continue through the summer. Repair work will continue on the south bound I-25 viaduct causing periodic lane closures.
May 4, 2007 DEMOLITION AND DISMANTLING: The long awaited demolition begins. What some might have hoped would be a dramatic Hollywood style explosion, in reality will be a controlled and tedious process of breaking off small pieces of the deteriorating bridge and hauling away the debris. The reusable materials will be sent to reclamation facilities for recycling. At this time, the demolition is only for the northbound interstate bridge over Main Street. The southbound on-ramp traffic from Main Street will be detoured on to the Santa Fe Trail. The other bridges will be demolished later this summer. This week, the construction of retaining walls and storm drains continued near Main Street and Commercial Street. The one lane configuration on I-25 will remain in effect for the duration of the project.
April 27, 2007 DEMOLITION RESCHEDULED: The demolition of the Main Street bridge scheduled for earlier this week has been delayed due to weather conditions, it is being rescheduled for next week. When demolition begins, the southbound on-ramp from Main Street will be temporarily closed while the bridge deck and girders are being dismantled. Also next week, the construction of retaining walls and storm drains will continue near Main Street and Commercial Street. The one lane configuration on I-25 will remain in effect for the duration of the project.
April 20, 2007 DEMOLITION: Demolition of the I-25 bridge over Main Street will begin Monday and Tuesday of next week. The southbound ramp will be closed, all other ramps will remain open. All ramps should reopen on Wednesday April 25. Weather caused a one day delay for the planned shift of the northbound traffic to the left lane of southbound lanes. Both the northbound and southbound directions will have only one lane of traffic available. This lane configuration will be in place until summer of 2009 as the Main Street bridge, the Purgatoire River bridge, and the I-25 Viaduct will be under construction.
April 13, 2007 MEDIAN WORK: This week CDOT will be restricting the southbound lanes to the right lane for continued median work and concrete barrier placement. On April 16 northbound traffic will be detoured to the left lane of the southbound lanes. Both the northbound and southbound directions will have only one lane of traffic available. This lane configuration will allow for the reconstruction of the I-25 bridges over Main Street and over the Purgatoire River and will remain in effect until September 2007.
March 29, 2007 LANE CLOSURES: In the first part of April look for the Contractor to modify I-25 laneage. During the week of April 2 the southbound I-25 inside lane will be closed from the Purgatoire River to just south of Main Street. On April 16 northbound traffic will be detoured onto the closed southbound lane. Two-way traffic will continue on the existing southbound lanes through September 2007. This traffic detour will accommodate the reconstruction of the northbound Main Street and Purgatoire River bridges.
