The City of Trinidad reaches a major milestone in February of 2011 as the Southbound I-25 Viaduct is nearly ready to receive traffic. The last viaduct spans are up and complete with concrete decking, traffic barriers and lighting.
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the City of Trinidad held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, February 4th to dedicate the new Southbound structure. CDOT's Chief Engineer Pam Hutton said, "Reconstructing I-25 has accomplished our goal of improving safety and enhancing traffic flow through Trinidad," adding that, "The new I-25 also is providing much better access for the city's residents and visitors, as well as adding aesthetic and architectural detail that enhances and compliments the historic downtown."
Trinidad Mayor Jennie Garduno, also in attendance, said, "It's been a long wait so we're really excited about getting it opened to traffic. With the increased mobility of society, opening the new I-25 will enhance Trinidad's opportunities to promote tourism and bring commerce to our downtown businesses."

There is still a little work left to do: Some additional work remains on the southbound viaduct. CDOT has switched Southbound traffic to the Southbound Viaduct. The Northbound Viaduct has been reconfigured from its double lane configuration (one lane in each direction) to a single lane in the Northbound direction. Northbound and Southbound traffic will remain in this one-lane configuration (one
lane open on each viaduct) through the spring to allow finishing work to continue. Watch our Traffic Alerts for the scheduled opening of the viaduct to two lanes of traffic in each direction. The finish work will include items such as final paving, installing street lighting, final landscaping along the trail and in the park, and completing the bridge structure and wall painting. All Southbound I-25 reconstruction, including all ARRA work, is expected to be completed Summer 2011.
The purpose of the current I-25 Trinidad reconstruction project is to replace the aging infrastructure through Trinidad and to provide a safe transportation system with acceptable access to and from the City. Along with the new infrastructure being designed/constructed to the latest geometric and safety standards, the new facility incorporates aesthetic features that tie into the City's historical architecture and natural surroundings.
