Construction began in 2003 with the SH 12 (Highway of Legends) Extension as Phase I of the project. Phase I construction was completed in 2004 and its history can be followed in the archived construction photos.
Phase II of the project followed in two parts, consisting of Northbound and Southbound I-25, and was completed in early 2012. The limits of each half of Phase II construction are shown on the Progress Map. A photo tour of the completed project and the history of construction can be viewed on the Progress Photos page.

A future Phase III project, that will reconstruct I-25 from Van Buren Drive south to Sopris Road, is awaiting funding.

The reconstruction project traces its roots to a Corridor Access and Interchange Study in 1993. The Colorado Department of Transportation and various federal and local agencies proceeded through a series of Feasibility Studies that narrowed down the field of alternative designs, through engineering evaluation and public comment, to a single alternate. The alternate selected represented the best balance of safety improvements to the interstate as well as ensuring access to the community of Trinidad and related businesses. In 2001, the project was approved to be advanced to the environmental study and design stage ultimately resulting in the design we see constructed today.
Interesting Firsts: the I-25 Trinidad reconstruction featured some interesting firsts for Colorado including the use of Self-Consolidating Concrete in an on-site placement application and advanced LED Highway Guidance Lighting to eliminate light spill in surrounding neighborhoods. Both of these features may become more common on future CDOT projects.
